The premise is simple: complete the necessary steps to get to the next category (this involves a number of jumps for all categories except category one) and when you achieve category eight status and CH1 you'll have your skydiving certificate! You should keep several things in mind, firstly, it is not a matter of just doing the jumps, each one will have a specific aim - anything from just staying stable and on-heading to doing a controlled turn through 360-degrees in freefall. After you've demonstrated that you are competent you'll move onto the next category. Secondly, it's never compulsory to move onto the next category if you don't want to - if you don't like the prospect of going onto freefall and would like to stay on the static line a little more in order to build confidence, then tell your instructor. Lastle it must be stressed that all the steps here are at your instructor's discretion, which means they may slightly modify the following system to suit your needs.
It might sound like some hard work, and it will take practive if you want to get your skydiving certificate, but it is very satisfying, very rewarding, and each jump is a whole new experience that makes it a very, very fun ride!
